Belton is a city that has deep roots in American history. Built over 150 years ago, Native Americans called Shawnees first inhabited the land where Belton stands today. They held possession of the area four miles west of the city, now known as the Black Bob Reservation.
Established in 1872 by George W. Scott and William H. Colbern, Belton quickly grew into an important trading post and railway stop between Kansas City and St. Louis, providing a vital service to the region during America’s Civil War as rebel troops used Belton to aid their cause.
