History

Mission Woods is an exceptional suburban community, boasting 80 distinctive homes scattered throughout four tree-lined streets. Located next to a charming church, office space, and a local school, it is encircled by State Line Road and just a short walk away from Kansas City’s famed Country Club Plaza.

Alexander Johnson built the area’s first private home in 1860 and by 1926, the Johnson family sold some of the 2000 acres to Mission Hills Country Club for golf course expansion. In 1937, J.C. Nichols bought the remaining property which inspired the name, Mission Woods.

In 1949, Mission Woods was officially incorporated along with neighboring Fairway, Westwood, and Westwood Hills after E.J Rychel Jr. was voted as their first mayor. Homebuilding continued at pace, supported by commercial growth in Northeast Johnson County, and the iconic H.D Lee Jeans building with its tulip columns was constructed in 1967 becoming known as The 1900 Building later on.

Today, The 1900 Building along with Barney Building has all been refurbished while St Philippine Duchesne Church has undergone a detailed renovation too. Residents of this small town enjoy a strong sense of communal pride as well as being just 15 minutes away from bustling downtown Kansas City.
