Fairway, Kansas was founded in 1949 by J.C. Nichols, renowned real estate developer from Kansas. Inspired by tree-lined fairways of the Country Club Plaza golf course nearby, Nichols chose the ‘Fairway’ name.

Originally part of Shawnee Indian Mission Township established in the 1800s, Fairway had a complex relationship between mission & tribe – forced removals & land seizures took place. Now an important site of cultural and historical significance in Johnson County, Shawnee Indian Mission’s impact is still evident today.

Trees have been integral to Fairway’s urban landscape since the early days due to J.C. Nichols’ vision incorporating them into his planning. Even now, visitors can enjoy these majestic sights & consider how they’ve been part of the city’s past and present story.
