How Do I Know I Have Bats In  My Attic or Walls?

Little Brown Bats or Big Brown Bats start to become active approximately 30 minutes before sunset and start nesting and roosting approximately 30 minutes after sunrise. Peak activity occurs approximately at 9-10 PM and active throughout the night. They can easily be heard during the night across attics, loudly scratching or vocalizing in localized areas. It is common to hear squeaks with a chirping like sound during the night and even during the day.

What Damage Can Bats Cause?

  • Insulation Damage: Urine and dropping accumulations

  • HVAC Ventilation Systems: Air ducts torn open by bats as HVAC ducts run in attics and walls, this can also lead to bat entrapment

  • Roof Damage: Shingles can get torn apart and openings are created on roofs by persistent on long staying wildlife

Economic Damage

Bats are one extremely beneficial flying critters. They eat thousands of mosquitoes every night and some people offered them bat houses near their homes to reduce the number of small flying insects around their home. However, bats can make entry into a building through small openings that yield 1/4-1/2 inch openings. Once bats make entry to a building they began roosting and generations of bats can thrive if undisturbed by people. Economically speaking bats can cause significant damage to a building when exclusion is not conducted. Some of the most common problems are damaged insulation due to high concentrations of urine accumulating over long-periods of time, excessive accumulations of guano (bat droppings), and wood rod due to urine and bat guano. Vents can also become easily damage as bats usually like to hang around attic vents and the accumulations of guano and urine began to breakdown vents.
